Gloria’s Story

In 2023, Gloria first connected with Project Hope Alliance, a nonprofit in Orange County who take a preventive approach to homelessness by providing active case management and direct support to OC students experiencing homelessness within their school systems, to positively impact their lives through on-site services.

Gloria’s three children attend Scholarship Prep Charter School, a partner of Project Hope Alliance in Santa Ana. Like some families supported by the organization, Gloria is currently undocumented but can work to provide for her children through DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). Having maintained her job for several years, Gloria works hard to ensure her children can complete their education and break the cycle of poverty. Recently, she confided in her Project Hope Alliance case manager, Celso, about her struggles. With her DACA status soon expiring, Gloria lacked the funds for renewal and feared losing her job, as well as the possibility of deportation and being separated from her children.

Celso acted quickly, reaching out to several legal aid agencies. However, due to high demand, they could not assist for five days. Undeterred, Celso contacted World Relief Southern California, shared Gloria's story, and, fortunately, they agreed to help—but emphasized the need for urgency. Celso kept Gloria updated and advised her to contact World Relief directly. She did, securing an appointment the following day. At her appointment, Gloria was informed that World Relief Southern California would assist with her DACA renewal application and the associated fee. Thanks to their timely support, Gloria's renewal application was processed, and her DACA status was successfully renewed.

With her status secured, Gloria can continue working, allowing her children to stay focused on their education. Celso notes that Gloria’s next goal is to become a legal resident, with the ultimate dream of seeing all three of her children attend college.
