Power of One Hour: Rewriting OC’s Literacy Needs

7/25/2025

Childhood literacy is one of the most pressing needs in Orange County, and Love Costa Mesa is stepping up to help lead the charge. In May, they wrapped up their final CAFÉ of the year at Wilson Elementary—a gathering that only began in February yet has already drawn 21 community members eager to make a difference. Around the table were church staff, school and District leaders, City representatives, a School Board member, parents, nonprofits, and civic groups, all united in supporting the principal’s vision for the school. Together, they celebrated a year of increased parent engagement, more extended learning opportunities, and improved student attendance.

As conversations turned toward next year, one goal rose to the top: helping students who are struggling to read at grade level. Love Costa Mesa and their partners began dreaming about how to make that vision a reality and launched an initiative called Power of One Hour. The idea is simple but transformative—volunteers commit to just one hour a week reading with a child, encouraging them, and giving them tools to succeed.

The stakes are high. Research shows that only one in three U.S. students reads proficiently by the end of 3rd grade. Those who fall behind are four times more likely to drop out of school, and many face lifelong challenges. Love Costa Mesa believes that can change. Through the Power of One Hour, they hope to rally a community of volunteers to help children discover the joy of reading—and in doing so, open doors to a brighter future.
